SONGKET FABRICS

Songket is handwoven fabric in silk or cotton patterned with gold or silver threads. Southeast Asian women have practiced the traditional songket weaving for more than two centuries. Most Malay people wear clothes made of songket fabric during special occasions such as wedding ceremonies or religious festivals.

ENDANGERED WORKMANSHIP

The traditional songket weaving skills are increasingly endangered due to rapid economic development of factory-based weaving. The industrial textiles utilize jacquard loom with punch card for mass production. The intense manual labor of home-based songket hand-weaving on handlooms, and its limited income is providing less incentive for younger generations to inherit these skills.

MONOPOLISTIC SONGKET MARKET

The broker plays a vital role on the songket production and distribution.
